Title: A beginners introduction to numerical relativity and boson star mergers
Abstract: We begin with a concise overview of general relativity and numerical relativity aiming to give a non-specialist insight into the numerical modelling of gravitational systems. Boson stars, configurations of (complex) scalar fields, are then examined for their significance in astrophysics and dark matter. Finally a numerical simulation of a boson star collision is discussed; the collision aftermath produces a semi-long lived perturbed state emitting continuous gravitational waves. This prolonged gravitational afterglow provides a characteristic signal that may distinguish it from other astrophysical sources.
