Hydrodynamical cosmological simulations to show how competing dark matter models (cold, warm and self-interacting) affect the properties of the progenitor galaxies that build up the stellar halo. Since this affects the relative importance between tidal stripping and dynamical friction once they have been accreted by a host galaxy, the orbital distribution of (stripped) halo stars changes. As such, the overall properties of the resulting stellar halo reflect the assumed nature of the dark matter.
